Update as of september 2011: Microsoft has launched a small script/tool, that could help you out. You can find it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233/en-us
I’ve had problems with my connections in Vista for quite a while now, and I think i finaly have found the solution. My problem was that I lost the connection after a while without really knowing why. My xp-laptop were still online. Anyway, after discovering that my linksys router may not support DHCP BROADCAST flag, i found a solution from Microsoft on how to disable this function in Vista. So far my connection have been stable after adding the DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToogle
So, here is how you do it.
1. Click Start
, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}
In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey that corresponds to the network adapter that is connected to the network.
If you don’t know wich one of those cryptic {GUID} to select, just find the one that has got an IP address. (se screenshot below)
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
4. In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToggle, and then press ENTER.
5. Right-click DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToggle, and then click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
7. Close Registry Editor.
If you are using both wireless and regular connection, you’ll need to add DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToggle to both.
I hope this works out for you. If it does or doesn’t please leave a comment on this page.

Didn’t work. It seems like vista is deleting my network driver.
Hi, thanks for sollution. I’ve been trying to solve it for couple weeks. I will write later if it works for good, I need to test it for a while to be sure.
>>>!!! U can add at the bottom of solution that after rebooting system U need to set up the internet connection again «Control Panel \ Network and Sharing Center \ Set up a connection or network…». At least I had to do this to make internet work.
Thanks
O M G this FUCKIGN WORKD! THXTHXTHXTHX YOU SAVED ME HOURS!
It’s a nice procedure, but the internet still wont work…:(
Thanks for the help … it worked like a charm.

A number of issues here and Admin, please help us:
1. Some machines are old and still do have HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}. Mine is barely 2 months old-a toshiba with HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\ plus three folders not 4 as others have said. The first and third folder do have stuff leading to the file: DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag and I assumed one was for ethernet connection while the other was for wireless. But due to ignorance of which one is which, I set the value for each to zero, after alternating options, restarting in each case and nothing.
2. Also, I read some machines have Zone Alarm and I have no idea what this is and what for, my machine does not have Zone Alarm and I took it the Vista guys decided to remove it.
3. Then I read about Norton 360 and my hair stood up! I still have this on my machine and am wondering if indeed this could be the problem. Can Vista guys help?
4. Another thing is that I do not have internet access of my own, am still poor, but was accessing the college wireless internet facility, before the machine started acting up.
So, guys out there, admin, everyone, please help.
Tried this, but it did not work. How do I change it back?
hi,
what if there ist to paths with guid subkeys which has similiar ip-adresses in it? with which one of them should i work?
i would be very glad to get an answer..
best regards,
crizal
My wife has a new HP Pavilion dv7 laptop that has Vista Premium 64 bit and she has had intermittent issues with our home network for 2 months. What usually happens is you can’t connect to the network and Vista shows Local Only. We go through all of the disconnect/connect stuff and eventually we get her back on. This morning however was a nightmare. We got everything working as usual but this time IE/FireFox doesn’t work. Vista doesn’t find anything wrong. So I came across this page and tried it out and it works.
Now, my issue is not with the router. It is a 2Wire router/wireless DSL and it has worked with every desktop, laptop, NAS I’ve thrown at it. I’m writing this email with her old laptop running Windows 7 RC 7100 64 bit. No issues ever. Furthermore, this laptop had Vista Home Premium and in the 2 years she had no issues ever with the internet.
Is it possible the new HP laptop is using newer wireless hardware that conflicts with our router? Her business router works 100%, which I’m more concerned with than the home router. I know this fix only affects the home connection, but with Windows you never know.
You simply delete the key you just created. Right click the «DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToggle» and choose delete. That’s it. It’s still no harm leaving it like it is.
Will this work with a 64 bit system?? I was wondering because once I press on «edit» and then «new» it has two options: DWORD 32 bit and QWORD 64 bit. I am running a 64 bit vista system. Thank You.
i still cant get it online >.<
Hi Thanks a lot.
Seems to have worked for me.
I also changed to Mozilla Firefox and stopped using Internet Explorer and this has made my connection much smoother and faster.
HI guys,
I dont know if anyone can help me.
I was using the internet last night absolutely fine, no problems.
This morning i try to connect using an ethernet cable and i get ‘local connection only’, so i unplug the cable and try and connect wirelessly, same problem.
My stepfather can connect fine using both wireless and cable so i know the issue is with my laptop and not with the router.
To be dead sure i went to my fathers house and still same problem there.
The only thing that had changed overnight was the my norton antivirus software had expired. I heard from a lot of people that this was causing problems so i uninstalled it totally. Still same problem.
I’m totally at a loss what to do now, i have tried everything, the regedit thing, changing my ip address, the diagnostic tool, deleting the wireless network and re-entering it, literally i have tried it all and still nothing works.
Short of paying an extortionate amount to have it fixed i dont know what to do! Please help!
After restarting the laptop sometimes the wireless connection can not work. But the wireless becomes work few minutes later after i plug the Ethernet cable.
Please give a solution of this problem.
Hi guys,
First, thanks to Eric who posted his solution above on Dec 22nd, 2008. I could not connect to the Internet using Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. However, Safari browser was working fine. This did not solve my problems as most softwares could not update automatically using Safari. I also could not activate products online. I tried numerous tricks all provided in this forum and many others. However, what did the trick was running the Norton uninstaller: See link below for Norton uninstaller.
http://esupport.trendmicro.com/support/viewxml.do?ContentID=EN-1034185&id=EN-1034185
Immediately it uninstalled and I restarted the HP Pavilion tx 2000 laptop (running Windows Vista Home premium), I got Internet Explorer connection back and also Mozilla Firefox. Interestingly, Safari stopped working. Luckily, I dont need it. Keep up the good work. It really helps.

i tried many methods from above,,but not yet to turn off my power save in my network,,
probably anybody ever try for this?
That didn’t work for me at all unfortunately. My laptop that runs on poor VISTA would no longer pick up my Belkin wireless router to share the internet connection like it did before without any problems. After doing the things in the registry as per the given instructions and screenshots in this forum it’s still a status quo for me. What does solve my issue is this. I so happen to have 2 profiles with administrative privileges set up on my VISTA laptop so all I have to do is log into the one that will pick up my wireless connection to initiate on the connection and then it’ll work for the other profile even when I log out from the one that seems to work?!?!. That seems to be the only way for now to pick it up which is rather bizarre to say the least. I think it’s already been established that VISTA is such a bad OS. I’ll be upgrading to Windows 7 as I’ve had it with VISTA. Along with millions of other people so have I had my fair share of an absolutely appalling experience with it.
I tried the fix indicated and no longer have the problem. My HP Pavillion Vista computer no longer looses its internet connection. Thanks.
Jon
Thank you so much this has been driving me crazy! Followed your guide and im connected again with vista without a reboot!
didn’t work for me unfortunately, but nice of you to post the info.
I have an HP laptop with Vista installed. My internet connection keeps dropping. I have to disconnect and reconnect. I recently moved and have lower internet speed and it kicks me off every few minutes. I tried your suggestions above but they are not working.
What else can I do? I called HP and they said it was a software issue and that they would charge me $140 to troubleshoot. I said forget it and now looking on the internet for someone tech saavy to help me out.
Thanks a lot, my problem appears to be sovled. We have two xp and three vista machine in our home. One would not connect now it is working,,,,,,, thanks
i have tried above, i had this problem with vista internet connection. and it solved the problem, i am online now.. thanks

hi admin,
i did everything you stated here but still does not work may be i did not add that file the last thing you said.
how to add DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToggle to both as you mentioned above.
Can’t thank you enough, followed your fixes and all seems OK. Set both disable and force registers and now working fine.
Cheers, Lol XX
Just carried out the changes and the laptop seems transformed fingers crossed and many many thanks.

Man you rock…..thanks a ton bro…..customer care guys were making me crazy and was pulling my hair and cursing myself….u r a rockstar.thanks again.
Just a question .I never had this problem when I use a wi-fi router.I have this problem when I use modem .
i just found a solution for wireless problems when your running windows vista and it keeps dropping every few minutes, if theres other xp computers running on your internet connection then disable ipv6 because windows xp uses ip4 this inteferes with your internet connection windows vista has ip4 already installed. ive just done this and its been working great for me ive got excellent signal.to disable ipv6 go onto start, control panel, network and sharing centre, manage wireless networks, find your connection and go on adapter properties, untick the box that says internet protocol version 6 (TCP?IPv6). hope this helped.
thanks. you are helped me.
Hi,
Trying to run your fix, but when getting as far as currentcontrol/sevices,I can’t get TCPIP to appear all I get is TSDDD or VGASAVE coming up, any help or assistance or am i doing something wrong?
Thanks in advance
Shane
Unfortunately this doesn’t work on my laptop. I’ve tried this DHCP thing, also disable ipv6, upnp and blah blah but none of them help. Still dropping connection randomly.
I believe the best way avoiding disconnection is to upgrade my laptop from Vista to XP.
help to fix my wireless connection sometimes have and sometimes no. no icon show for internet connection. before i always used it for sharing internet connection and it shows a problem. how can i fix it? advice pls.
Tried but didn’t work for me. when I tried to create new dword 32 bit, got error message «Error creating value: cannot create value: error writing to registry.
A couple of months ago my connection decided to disable it’s self, after looking around various «help sites» i found yours, and i STILL have no connection. when i type in «regedit» i don’t get the same window up as what you do, and can not find the «GUID» link, please help ?????????
So this worked briefly, but them stopped working. I had three GUID ‘s (?) that had IP addresses so I did this to all of them. Could that be my problem? How do you undo this? Just delete the entered text?
Thanks!
I followed the steps and I am about to reboot my HP. I am staring at the teeenie tiny screen of my Acer and I just wanted to throw this out there in case it doesn’t work… if it doesn’t I give up for the night. So my problem…
I «connect» but only have local access. I found the Users settings where it allows for a roaming profile…. in theory… but it won’t let me choose that option, I don’t even know if that is a problem. I bought this computer from a guy whose business went under and I am deathly afraid that I deleted some essential thing when I was clearing his stuff off. I have been known to do daft stuff like that before. Please Help.
The other half of the problem is the fact that I am on the road and using coffee shop wifi – no steady or regular router to work with. I don’t know what I am doing. Please Please Please help.
I am so glad that this was not the result of my lack of patience with computers. I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING WRONG!!!!! I can deal with a problem much more easily once I am sure that I did not bring it upon myself… sometimes I really miss typewriters and number two pencils. and I am only 30. sigh… still no success, but the Symantec Service Framework error lets me blame Norton instead of myself for messing up my computer.
Finally a solution that I feel really hopeful will help. (As seems to be everyone’s experience, I’ve been frustrated for months by this problem!) But how do I determine which subkey corresponds to the network adapter? Thanks so much for the help!
Just bought a Packard Bell NJ65. Wired internet works fine but wireless had the standard connecting to Local only. Tried following Windows Vista guidance and the inbuilt utility told me I hadn’t enabled my network card despite Vista saying it works fine.
Tried the microsoft fix that this thread starts off with to no avail. Then I updated my Billion router Firmware still to no avail so I tried a Belkin Router with the same problem still present, hmmmm, starting to smell a rat somewhere!
Eric hit the nail on the head for me (Dec 22 2008) as I’ve had trouble with Trend products not working due to Nortons being previously installed. (Cheers mate – saved me hours doing unnecessary things Microsoft recommended!)
Problem identified – my PC has the option of 90 days free Norton Internet 2009 but I didn’t want to use it as I subscribe to another anti-virus provider that’s a lot less hassle than Nortons, I disabled Nortons and and eventually uninstalled it, problem persisted.
Solution – Out of curiosity I reinstalled and activated the free 90 days Norton Internet 2009 trial and now everything is working fine so – in my case its Nortons that is messing things up.
Had this before with Nortons stopping me successfully installing Trend and then McAfee products – isnt this rtestrictive practice!! – thanks Symantec, said I’ never use your products again historically because of the hours I’ve wasted and got fed up with the daily reminder my subscription was going to expire in about 90 days – so annoying!! In addition I often find Norton Utilities that I subscribed to makes my PC worse rather than better in the long run!! Used to be a micrsoft certified professional on networking, NT and XP so if i struggle then I feel very sorry for anyone who has come across this problem who isnt a techie!.
My next step is get the Symantec product off my machine and never use it again, if they can’t play fair with the competition then I won’t be supporting them!,besides Trend picks up Spyware that Nortons seems not to find – and then my machine runs faster – enough said!! Spyware = someone somewhere is watching what you do!!!
Good luck in getting your Wireless connections working and thanks to Cato for hosting this thread, without it I’d have wasted many more hours searching in the wrong areas due to bad advice from Microsoft.
Happy surfing!!
Chris
thanks man you are the best i almost dump my laptop
problem fix. work perfect
Omg. this totally made my comp not work nemore! idk what happened. my internet wasnt workin rite i thought this would make it better but i just did it and now my laptop wont work ne more it turned on at first and when i put my password so i can go to the startmenu. the whole page went black!. i restarted it but now i cant even get that far!!! i cant system restore it cuz i cant get far enough to get to the start menu! and i cant system recovery cuz i dont have ne backup files!!!… omg idk wat to do!!!!!
What do you mean here:
«If you are using both wireless and regular connection, you’ll need to add DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToggle to both.»
Both what? Bananas? How exactly please?
Hey man, awesome solution! Worked like magic! Thanks much!
Thrilled2Bits:
You need to add the flag to both lines under «Interfaces» as you can se from my sceenshot I have 3 lines under «Interfaces». One of them is mye ethernet connection, the other my wireless and the third, something else.
It did the trick! Thank YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you… I really appreciate it. I have been looking for a solution for an entire month to this issue. It was so disheartening every time one wouldn’t work and it was getting to the point where I didn’t even want to use my laptop anymore.
So far everything’s good!
