Strange problem with my internet connection in Vista – Solved!

A small note! I’ve had no problems after I did this. And remember, if you experience any trouble after applying this solution, you can simply change it back again. Good luck, and feel free to contact me.

I’ve had problems with my connections in Vista for quite a while now, and I think i finaly have found the solution. My problem was that I lost the connection after a while without really knowing why. My xp-laptop were still online. Anyway, after discovering that my linksys router may not support DHCP BROADCAST flag, i found a solution from Microsoft on how to disable this function in Vista. So far my connection have been stable after adding the DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToogle

So, here is how you do it.

1. Click StartStart button, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list. User Account Control permission If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}

In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey that corresponds to the network adapter that is connected to the network.

If you don’t know wich one of those cryptic {GUID} to select, just find the one that has got an IP address. (se screenshot below)

3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.

4. In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToggle, and then press ENTER.

5. Right-click DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToggle, and then click Modify.

6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

7. Close Registry Editor.

If you are using both wireless and regular connection, you’ll need to add DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToggle to both.

I hope this works out for you. If it does or doesn’t please leave a comment on this page.

  1. Does this only take care of connections with routers? I am having problems with losing internet connection and iI am connected directly to my modem. Will this solve this problem? After speaking with my provider, they sugggested a new network card. Anyone have any suggestions? Not to compter savy here.
    Thanks.

  2. Recently I did an Upgrade to Windows 7 and had no problem at all untll I got the notification that updates couldn’t get through followed by a dark screen telling me that I was using an illegal version :S
Any ways I didn’t hesitate and changed back to Vista and the problems started over again; after each update it wants to restart, Internet explorer stoped working and basically froze so I had to shut down through Tasks bar, and my windows mail would stop working because of connection failures.

the worst thing is that i can’t change the Menu and task bar language.. I need to set it up in English and the instllation was done in Holland therefore the language is Dutch. Please help me with this part because I cant loose my laptop again for a reboot.
I already took the advice on top. Thanks a lot for that , now lets see if it works

  3. Hello, I am having a weird problem with local and internet access on my Vista laptop and XP desktops as well as in a Linux run laptop.

We are using a satellite internet in a remote area of Mexico. We have been using it with no problem for about a month. All of a sudden on tuesday all we get is local access NO internet access. The weird thing is that with local access we can brows most pages, including facebook and some movie sites. However, the most important thing for us is email and that we cannot even access the login pages (www.mail.yahoo.com, http://www.mail.gmail.com, or hotmail). It says

    ” Unable to connect
Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at http://www.google.com.
    * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
    moments.

    * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network
    connection.

    * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

We have tried IE, Mozilla, UBUNTU and Chrome all say the same thing.

When you first turn on the computer you get both local and internet access for about 5 minutes but then it goes back to just local access. And in those five minutes we still cannot acess the email login pages.

Does anybody know what is up? I called the Mexico satellite providers and well they don’t understand whats going on either. I appreciate any help you can give us. Gracias
    Colibri

  4. I fixed my similar issue by resetting the win sock. Instructions below.

    Good luck. What a relief.

  5. hahaha… i had this same problem for 3+ weeks. the solution was to get a different cordless phone. the problem is that 2.4ghz cordless phones use the same bandwidth as many wireless modems (2.4ghz). check out any new cordless phones these days, and they’re all either 5.8ghz or “dect 6.0.” the new bandwidth won’t battle your wireless connections.

well, there’s my good deed for the day. you’re welcome.

  6. Thanks so much! I was getting really upset that my internet would just drop out all of the time while the xp computers were still working just fine. I have a linksys router too so I searched and searched until finally finding this article. I tried all kinds of things, I thought it might be the firewall or something else but this did the trick!

  7. I have a Toshiba satellite laptop that one day stopped connecting to the internet even though It shows my router with a excellent signal. I came across these instructions and gave them a try. PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!! I cant believe it worked. This website was truly a life saver. THANKS!!!!

  8. While fiddling around with everything possible to resolve this issue, I found that my BELKIN N1 router’s DHCP Lease Time was set to 1/2 hour! This coincided with the loss of internet connection on my Laptop 9Win 7 Ultimate). I suspected that the loss was occurring at regular intervals but could not figure out why!
Last night I reset the router to a 2-weeks lease time and since then (10 hours aleady) I have not lost the connection once! Seems Win 7 may have a problem refreshing(or polling) the DHCP or the IP address automatically!

I hope this is the end of my delema and I hope this is helpful to others.

    Bless u all.

  9. the note after step 7 says:

“If you are using both wireless and regular connection, you’ll need to add DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToggle to both.”

How would I modify the steps to “add to both”?

    Thanks,

    Kent
